…the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you…

(EXODUS 12:13)

The last of the plagues which God inflicted on the land of Egypt was the most fearful and horrific. Time after time Pharaoh, though repeatedly humbled, would rise again and again in hardness and reckless despair of the God of Israel. But now the last and most terrible of the judgments of heaven was to be brought on Pharaoh and the land. The account is given to us in Exodus chapter 12. Reader, think of that terrifying, terrible scene! God had provided for the safety of the children of Israel, and so, the blood of the Paschal Lamb was to be sprinkled “…take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses” (EXODUS 12:7).

Now this solemn account of the LORD’S gracious provision is instructive in itself, but chiefly it was designed to prefigure the great scheme of the redemption of God’s elect people, by Christ Jesus the Lord—the Son of God. The apostle Paul sets forth in 1st Corinthians, how that “Christ our passover is sacrificed for us” (1 CORINTHIANS 5:7).

Now, what blood is referred to? It was to be the blood of a spotless lamb without blemish. This spotless lamb was the leading figure among the various sacrifices which pictured our Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified—for He is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Beloved “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” not just the elect among the nation of Israel! But rather the elect out from every nation of the world! (JOHN 1:29, REVELATION 5:9)

Further, notice that the spotless lamb’s blood was to be sprinkled according to divine instruction. We see how the blood of the lamb was to applied as God had directed (EXODUS 12:7,13). Now, this application of the blood on the house, was to teach us the necessity of a personal interest in the blood of Christ. No national or family relationship can save us. For we must be personally saved; for we are personally guilty.

“And when I see the blood, I will pass over you” now reader with respect to you—apart from the blood of Christ (the Lamb of God); God sees your guilt and the punishment due it, and outside of Christ, God cannot justly cancel or refrain Himself from punishing you with the penalty that is due your sins. But God provides the remedy, the redeemer for His people. He substitutes the blood of the Lamb and thus is gracious to guilty sinners. For in Christ, God does not look at the sinner but rather at His blood. For in beholding the blood God is satisfied. His justice is met. His law is magnified. His truth vindicated. His greatness is upheld; and at the same time, His goodness and love in Christ have the preeminence (COLOSSIANS 1:15-22). And so beloved believing sinner, rejoice! For by His own blood, His judgment “…will pass over you” for by His own blood, He presents “you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight” (COLOSSIANS 1:22). AMEN!
