Passage: Ephesians 2:8

By Grace Are Ye Saved

… not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

(EPHESIANS 2:8)

A gospel that puts conditions for a sinner to fulfill in order to be saved, is no gospel at all. The Word of GOD does not speak of conditions to be met, but rather it declares salvation through unconditional free sovereign grace. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (EPHESIANS 2:8)

The elect sinner, chosen of GOD, is not saved by his repentance, but is saved by GOD’s eternal and purposed grace in CHRIST. An elect sinner chosen of GOD is not saved by his receiving CHRIST, but is saved by GOD’s grace in CHRIST. And it is by GOD’s grace, according to HIS good will and pleasure, that HE gives saving faith to His people. Saving faith is declared in the word of GOD as “the gift of God”, that has for it’s object the faith that is not of ourselves, but rather the life and faith of CHRIST given to a sinner for salvation.

CHRIST bore our burden, the burden of His people, and gives us His rest!

Our LORD declares: “It is finished.” (JOHN 19:30) For whom is this salvation finished? CHRIST told us, in HIS great priestly prayer for HIS people “I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.” JOHN 17:9-10

CHRIST has taken away our sins and has given us HIS righteousness!

“For he hath MADE him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be MADE the righteousness of God in him.” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:21)

In fact, the angel of the LORD said “call his name Jesus: for he SHALL save his people from their sins.” (MATTHEW 1:21)

CHRIST bore our curse and gave us HIS blessing!

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us...” (GALATIANS 3:13)

CHRIST has taken away our death and given us HIS life!

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life...” (JOHN 3:36)

CHRIST has taken our shame and has given us HIS glory!

“And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one…” (JOHN 17:22)
“...I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 TIMOTHY 1:12)

CHRIST has taken our record and has given us HIS record!

We are accepted in Him and by Him, by His life, by His faith as a man, by His sin atoning sacrifice as our substitute; we are complete in CHRIST! Beloved we “…are complete in HIM.” (COLOSSIANS 2:10)

The believer never confuses the cause of salvation with the good works done by someone born of GOD. Yes, the believer has good works, because every one of them is wrought of GOD (JOHN 3:21, EPHESIANS 2:10). The works of sinners saved by His grace, their repentance, their faithfulness to keep the words and sayings of CHRIST are evidences that they have the SPIRIT of CHRIST, and are saved; but these works are not the cause of their salvation, but rather the evidence of their salvation.

CHRIST has accomplished the salvation of His people!

CHRIST gave HIS life a ransom to save HIS people, HE did not give HIS life a ransom to make every man savable, or put conditions before them to meet in order to be saved, rather it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure (PHILIPPIANS 2:13); by HIS unspeakable gift, through HIS unmerited free grace, the sinner has been given a new opened heart that wants to and can do everything according to GOD’s good pleasure, that of believing on him whom he hath sent, CHRIST JESUS our LORD. (JOHN 6:29)
