Passage: 1 Corinthians 13:5

In the Faith / In Christ

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith

(1 CORINTHIANS 13:5)

Beloved, in the scriptures we are commanded to examine ourselves, whether we be in the faith. Now, examining ourselves is not self reflection to see if I’ve done this thing and that thing. Or just as bad, to see if I haven’t done this or that, or even worse, thinking to oneself I am not as other men are—I’m not as bad as that sinner over there. So pastor, if it’s not those things, what is it?

My friend, what you’re looking for (when you’re examining yourself) is this, do I trust the Lord Jesus Christ alone for all my salvation? If you do, we’d sure like to hear about it.

Our Lord has commanded us to preach the gospel to every creature and “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved!” (MARK 16:15). Do you believe on the Son of God? Saved people confess Him in believer’s baptism—and they do confess Him, not to be saved, but rather my friend, you’ll do that because you already are!

You see, all my salvation, all my acceptance before God, is not found in my baptism, rather it’s found in His baptism, His faithfulness, and His righteousness. Beloved, it’s His obedience that saves us!

John the Baptist declared to those religious hypocrites “O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” (MATTHEW 3:7-15)—you know I don’t think one of those hypocrites ever confessed their sins—and so that is what makes it all the more remarkable, when John the Baptist said to our Lord “I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?” And our blessed Lord said “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.”

What a blessed hope! Our Lord did not say “for thus it becometh me to fulfill all righteousness” but rather “it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness!” O what a blessed reality! I’m in Him and He’s in me. He was made all my sin and He is all my righteousness! I’m one with Him! Is He Holy? Then I am holy. Is He accepted of the Father? Then so am I in Christ Jesus, my all and in all.
