The Face

God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

(2 CORINTHIANS 4:6)

Man has an eternal question to settle. What is the purpose of his existence? Surely we have more purpose than to be born, grow, become men and women, work, make money, buy food, eat, work, make more money, etc. and retire and live happily ever after. Even a fool can see that, yet men are worse than fools.

What then is the purpose?

To know, to love, and to walk with God. That is, to see God.

How then shall sinful man see God?

Our text says that we see God in the face of Jesus Christ. It is enough to see Jesus Christ with the eye of faith, for when we see Him we are convicted of sin, broken, cleansed, and set free from bondage. Everything that God requires is supplied when we see that marred face, spat upon and disfigured by the malice of men. We see not only the light of the knowledge of God, but the light of the knowledge of the glory of God.

In the Lord Jesus we see that God’s glory consists in the willingness of the Son of God to humble Himself. This is the very opposite of sinners. We see glory in exalting ourselves.

What does it mean to see God in the face of Jesus Christ?

It simply means that we apprehend Him as the supply of our every need and believingly lay hold on Him as such. The Lord Jesus is always seen through the eye of need. We see Him for our desperate need as sinners.

What is the purpose of life?

To see the glory of God! How then, seeing that “No man hath seen God at any time” (JOHN 1:18). Here it is: For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God IN THE FACE OF JESUS CHRIST.
