Passage: Psalm 103:10

Dealt With After The Merits Of Christ

He hath not dealt with us after our sins;
nor rewarded us according to our iniquities

(PSALM 103:10)

Beloved, the psalmist sets forth how that our God “…hath not dealt with us after our sins,” so why is it that God hath not dealt with us after our sins? Is it not because He hath dealt with our sins in another? Another who bore our sins, of whom our Heavenly Father declares “by His knowledge shall my righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities” (ISAIAH 53). Beloved, aren’t you glad He dealt with our sins in a substitute, the Lord Jesus Christ? And so why did our precious Lord bear our sins? Why was He “wounded for our transgressions,” and “bruised for our iniquities”? God’s own word sets forth the answer: so that our Heavenly Father “…might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus” (ROMANS 3:26).

Beloved, our God is just, He will not demand payment twice for the same sins. Therefore, having turned His fierce wrath upon His Son, He will not turn it upon us. Rather, having dealt with Him according to our sins, He now deals with us (His covenant people) according to His righteousness. Indeed, our Heavenly Father “hath made Him to be sin [making His Son’s soul an offering for our sins], who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” [2 CORINTHIANS 5:21, ISAIAH 53:10].

One hymn writer puts God’s gracious dealings with His people ever so blessedly this way—“Complete atonement Thou hast made, And to the utmost Thou hast paid, whatever Thy people owed; how then can wrath on me take place, If sheltered in Thy righteousness, And sprinkled with Thy blood? If Thou hast my discharge procured, And freely in my room endured, The whole of wrath divine; Payment God cannot twice demand, First at my bleeding Surety’s hand, And then again at mine. Turn then, my soul, unto thy rest! The merits of thy great High Priest have bought thy liberty; Trust in His efficacious blood, Nor fear thy banishment from God, Since the Lord Jesus Christ died for thee.”* Beloved believing sinner, He paid it all, everything you need to be saved, our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished by His doing, dying, and deliverance. He said, Father “It is finished,” “It is done,” “Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none” AMEN! [JOHN 19:30; 18:9; 6:39, REVELATION 21:6]
