Passage: John 5:39

The Testimony of Christ

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me

(JOHN 5:39)

I have been looking at the glorious Gospel of our Lord and God Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. Now, when reading the Word of God, while it is often referred to as the Old Testament and New Testament, I believe we would better serve God’s people if we called it by the same name our Lord called the Bible “The Testimony of Christ.”

The Lord Jesus declares “…the scriptures…are they which testify of me” (JOHN 5:39). So it would not do any damage to our Lord’s plain teaching to call the Bible, in its entirety, The Testimony of Christ.

In Genesis chapter 3 verse 21 we read “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” This verse testifies of the Gospel of Christ, that is, it testifies that salvation is of the LORD—all of it (JONAH 2:9).
So if we were to ask Adam and Eve “How is it that you are dressed?” They would reply “God clothed me.” Where did the filthy fig leaves of Adam and Eve’s doings go? They were put on Christ. What did the coats of skin represent? The “…wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption” of God’s substitute—Christ Jesus the Lord. And beloved “in Christ Jesus,” our Heavenly Father hath made Him “unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (1 CORINTHIANS 1:30-31).

So believing sinner—how is it that you have been made wise to salvation? Christ. How is it that you have been made righteous? Christ. How is it that you have been sanctified? Christ. How is it that you have been redeemed? Christ. “For as much as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” AMEN! [1 PETER 1:18,19]
